1. In Thailand, Siamese cats are known by a very suggestive name - "wichien-maat", which can be translated as "moon diamond".
2. In the past, Siamese cats had genetic characteristics such as kinked tails and strabismus, which were selected and maintained by breeders. Over time, these characteristics were considered defects and, through a rigorous selection process, were minimized to the point of almost disappearing. Nevertheless, it is still possible for Siamese cats to be born with strabismus.
3. Most Siamese cats are not able to tolerate lactose, as they lose the ability to digest it after the weaning period. This results in an absolute lactose intolerance in adulthood, and even a small amount of milk can lead to diarrhea. It is recommended that owners avoid giving milk to Siamese cats to prevent digestive problems.
4. Siamese cats have a life expectancy that can exceed 20 years, and with proper care, they can live even longer. There are famous cases of Siamese cats that lived up to 30 years, such as the cat Scooter, who entered the Guinness Book as the oldest cat in the world. This means that Siamese cat owners can expect to have a long-lasting companionship with their pets.
5. Two Siamese cats were responsible for exposing a spy conspiracy in the 1960s. These cats lived at the Dutch Embassy in Russia, and when they started acting strange, fluffing up their fur and leaning against a wall, the ambassador became suspicious. It was then that they discovered more than two dozen hidden microphones behind the wall after a thorough investigation.
6. The Siamese cat breed had a significant presence in the United States White House, as a birthday gift from the wife of the 19th President, Rutherford Hayes, in 1878. The Siamese cat given as a gift was named Siam. In addition, other American presidents such as Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford also had representatives of this breed as pets.
7. Generally, Siamese cat litters consist of about 6 kittens. However, there was an extraordinary case in the UK in 1970 where a Siamese cat gave birth to a litter of 19 kittens. Unfortunately, 4 of them were stillborn.
8. Siamese cats have blue eyes due to a genetic characteristic associated with albinism. As a result, the absence of pigment in the layers of the iris gives the breed its blue-eyed appearance. Therefore, all Siamese cats have blue eyes.
9. It is believed that the characteristic coloration of Siamese cats is the result of a genetic mutation of albinism. They are often called "temperature-sensitive albinos," since the color of their fur develops darker at the extremities when exposed to lower temperatures. However, most modern Siamese cats are not considered true albinos, and the complete mutation that results in a completely white coat with blue eyes is rare in the breed. This mutation is recessive and is not present in most Siamese cats.
10. It's surprising, but true that most Siamese cats are born completely white. This is because their genes respond to temperature, and the temperature of the mother's uterus keeps them white. Only after birth and exposure to cooler air does their fur begin to darken, developing their characteristic Siamese color patterns.
