Schutzhund tracking - articles
Schutzhund tracking is a very precise style of tracking so the start, the journey and the ending all must have equal value to the dog for best results. The dog is hunting for articles. Articles have a unique scent as they are foreign to the environment so will have a very strong odor compared to something that has been on the ground for several days or longer.
• value must be given to the articles and we do this by showing the dog it is very beneficial to the dog when he can find articles because the dog is heavily rewarded when he does.
• use a high value food (even with highly food motivated dogs). In this video I am using fried pieces of pork.
• I teach the articles off the track. This way when the dog comes across an article on the track, the dog will know exactly what he needs to do to get a reward.
• shape the dog’s behavior so that when he sees an article, he automatically downs with the article between his paws.
• Use an object the dog does not want to chew. In this video I am using a plastic mirror as it is not the type of material a dog likes to chew like wood or fabric. Best is a metal article as most dogs do not like the taste of metal.
• Shape behavior for the dog to start looking at the article with the article between both paws. At first, I click and drop a piece of food onto the article and then do rapid clicks so the dog does not develop the yo yo effect and learns the fastest way he will get the food is to look at the article.
