Bears are carnivoran mammals of the family Ursidae. They are classified as caniforms, or doglike carnivorans. Although only eight species of bears are extant, they are widespread, appearing in a wide variety of habitats throughout the Northern Hemisphere and partially in the Southern Hemisphere.Bears have large bodies, stocky legs, a long snout, shaggy hair, paws with claws, and a short tail. Even though bears are big and heavy, they can run very fast and are also good at climbing and swimming. Bears have a large brain and are one of the more intelligent mammals.
