สิ่งที่น่าสนใจ :
ตัวสีดำ ลิ้นสีม่วงปลายแฉก มีลายดอกสีขาวหรือเหลืองเป็นแถวพาดขวางตัว หางเป็นปล้องสีดำสลับกับเหลืองอ่อน หนังหยาบเป็นเกล็ด ลำตัวมีขนาดใหญ่กว่าสัตว์อื่นในจำพวกเดียวกัน แต่เล็กกว่ามังกรโคโมโด

ถิ่นอาศัย :
พบในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ รวมทั้งอินเดียและศรีลังกา ในประเทศไทยพบได้ทุกภาค

อาหาร :
เหี้ยไม่เลือกอาหาร กินทั้งสัตว์บกและสัตว์น้ำ สัตว์ปีก เช่น ไก่ นก ปลา กบ เขียด หนู กินได้ทั้งของสดและของเน่า

พฤติกรรม :
ดุ ใช้หางเป็นอาวุธฟาดศัตรูแล้วใช้ปากกัด ชอบอยู่ใกล้น้ำว่ายน้ำ ดำน้ำเก่ง และขึ้นต้นไม้เก่งด้วย

สถานภาพปัจจุบัน :
สิ่งมีชีวิตที่มีความเสี่ยงต่ำต่อการสูญพันธุ์

วัยเจริญพันธุ์ :
เหี้ยวางไข่ครั้งละ 15-30 ฟอง ขุดหลุมหรือทำโพรงเป็นที่วางไข่ ไม่ฟักไข่ คือพ่อแม่ไม่ต้องกกไข่ ลูกฟักตัวออกมาเองจากไข่โดยธรรมชาติ เมื่อลูกออกมาจากไข่แล้วก็หากินเอง เปลือกไข่นิ่มแต่เหนียว
