L'American Old English Shepherd Club è stato fondato nel 1904 e l'anno successivo la razza è stata riconosciuta dall'AKC.

Apparentemente, l'Old English Sheepdog è stato allevato nell'ovest dell'Inghilterra, nelle contee di Devon e Somerset e nel Ducato di Cornovaglia.

L'Old English Shepherd Dog è apparso per la prima volta all'inizio del XVIII secolo come "cane da guida", utilizzato principalmente per trasportare pecore e bovini ai mercati della metropoli.

Il pelo abbondante di un bobtail non è mai eccessivo e, contrariamente alla credenza popolare, pettinare un pelo del genere non è più difficile di qualsiasi altro pelo lungo.
