Bombay cat. Indian Cat puzzle for kids and adults.
Some facts.
The Bombay cat is a real black panther, only very small, with orange eyes and incredibly shiny fur. Despite the wild appearance and graceful gait of a predator, this kitty is absolutely domestic. She loves to sleep in an embrace with her beloved owner and lie on her lap, stretched out to her full height and singing her hypnotic cat songs. The pet is easy to care for: it instantly gets used to the tray and scratching post, and caring for its fur does not require much time or hairdressing skills. In a word, Bombay is a wonderful miracle. The only disadvantage of the breed is its high cost.

Origin story
Origin story
The word “Bombay” immediately evokes an association with India. This mysterious country has the island of Bombay and the city of the same name (since 1995, renamed Mumbai). Hot and humid climate, intricate temples against the backdrop of skyscrapers (yes, they exist in Mumbai), rickshaw taxis and expensive cars as ubiquitous as flies, women in saris and short tops from Western brands. This contrast hits you on the head like a sledgehammer. But American Nicky Horner was surprised by something else, namely the black Indian leopard (aka panther). The predator is on the verge of extinction, but black representatives of this cat tribe are even more rare.

And so, inspired by one of nature’s beautiful creations, a resident of Louisville (Kentucky), who also professionally bred domestic cats (Persians, Burmese and American Shorthairs), decided to create a domestic kitty panther. It was in 1953. From the fluffies that were at her disposal, the lady chose a golden-eyed black American shorthair and a champion Burmese with sable fur. Although the kittens from the first litter did not live up to the dream, the woman continued to work hard in this direction.

The experiments took about two years, and after four generations the breeder got what she wanted - graceful, athletically built, shiny black cats with copper-colored eyes. Horner managed the almost impossible. She got an exact copy of the predator without resorting to “wild” blood. As a rule, other hybrids - jaguar-Bengal, cheetah-Savannah, puma-Chausie - appeared with the help of wild cats, and therefore required long-term adaptation to tame their predatory nature. The newly minted Bombay was initially a completely domestic pussy.

It took 20 years for the breed to be recognized by the CFA. In 1976, Bombay received the title of champion, and a flurry of indignation fell on his head from fans of the Burmese breed. They considered the winner to be the black version of their charges. Nicky Horner decided not to get involved in the war and stopped working on the new breed. Other breeders turned out to be more persistent, and even during oppression they were engaged in breeding Bombays. One of them was the Zwecker couple, who received cats of the perfect jet black color. In 1985, their pet Luv It Black captivated the entire CFA jury with her beauty. Soon the “mother” of the Bombay people reappeared on the horizon. In 1986, Nicky Horner attended the “Love Blacks!” cat show, and the love for cats with the appearance of a demon flared up again. She bought the best kitten and set to work with renewed vigor. At the moment, the Bombay cat breed is recognized by the American associations, WCF and TICA. As always, the fastidious FIFe persists. This organization did not even include Bombays in the preliminary list.

There is nothing to say about the popularity of the Bombay cat; the breed is very rare throughout the world. Even in America itself, some 15 years ago, only about a hundred individuals were registered. So your pet at the exhibition will become exclusive without competition. True, you will have to work hard to find a cattery and reserve a kitten. By the way, it is almost impossible to buy a Bombay girl; all of them are left for breeding. Take a boy - he is just as sociable and, contrary to popular belief, is not at all stubborn and is very trainable, almost like a dog.

General characteristics of the breed
The Bombay is a medium-sized cat breed with short, exclusively black hair. The first purrs were very similar to the “brick in a silk robe” Burmese, but now they are increasingly different from each other. Main parameters:

weight - males 3.2-6.1 kg, females 2.6-5.7 kg;
height - 28-34 cm;
body length, including tail - up to 75 cm.

Lifespan
The average life expectancy of Bombay is 12-15 years. But there are cases where representatives of the breed died at an older age. In general, Bombay cats have good health and good heredity.
