Hey guys! We find out today if or Mini Jersey Dutchess is pregnant and we are also going to start preparing our Scottish highland cow for Artificial Insemination (AI) for the second time. let's pray this time takes.
In today's video I have our Veterinarian Dr. Edwards, Edwards Veterinarian Services from Morgan County Alabama, out to service our cows. First he is going to be examining Dutchess by ultrasound and then by hand palpation. When we prepped her for AI back in December she had alot of tissue in her cervix that wasn't supposed to be there. He had to go in with scissors and cut away the tissue that would have been her hymen. It was a stressful situation for Dutchess but she handled it very well. almost like she didn't even feel it. I no that she felt it the next day though (my poor girl). After examination today Doc says she feels much better, no extra tissue but as you watch this video you'll see there was still some complications.
It took us about 30 minutes or so to get peaches into the milking stand. I wish she was halter trained, it would make things so much easier, but we got it done. Dr. Edwards got the CIDR stick in fairly easy and now we wait a couple weeks before the next process.

Here is information on what CIDR is:
Controlled internal drug release (CIDR) devices are used in livestock for the synchronization of estrus. They are T-shaped devices with a silicone-coated nylon core.[1] The silicone coating is impregnated with progesterone.[2] CIDRs are inserted intra-vaginally using a specialized applicator. The flexible wings collapse for facilitated insertion and expand once placed appropriately within the vagina.[2] The expansion of the wings retains its position; CIDRs have very high retention rates that may exceed 97%.[3] A thin nylon tail remains exteriorized and is used for removal.[2]

Once inserted, CIDRs provide slow-release administration of progesterone, which artificially extends the luteal phase.[1] Plasma progesterone levels rapidly increase upon insertion, and remain relatively consistent while in place.[4] Following CIDR removal, progesterone levels decrease rapidly.[3] Occasionally, vaginal irritation may occur. This is normal and does not impact the effectiveness of the device or the animal’s performance.[3]
