The onset of clinical signs can occur between 2 and 10 years old. There are wide variations of clinical signs which indicates variable penetrance of the gene. In this disease, cones degenerate first, followed by rods, also called cone led degeneration. Cones detect bright lights and colours. Rods detect dim light and night vision. Affected dogs do not follow the pattern of night blindness first in cases of cone-rod dystrophy, they gradually lose all vision.

Dogs adapt to blindness fairly well, especially with slow onset. They adapt better when the surroundings remain familiar and they should always be kept on the lead. Balls with bells or other audible toys can be used for play and mental stimulation. Affected dogs should not be startled.
