It is a relatively recent breed, having only been formally recognized in 1991, compared to several other cat breeds that have been around since the 1940s. The Munchkin is regarded as the original dwarf cat breed.
Munchkin is described as "outgoing, intelligent, and responds well to being handled" . While some sources claim their condition limits their ability to jump, others claim their short legs do not affect their running or leaping abilities.
