We saw the Indian version of the Dragon - the Monitor Lizard . We were busy watching a Rhino mother and calf at Kaziranga national park, when this dragon sneaked under our noses and came out behind us trying to cross the road.

The Indian Monitor is a smaller cousin of the huge Komodo Dragon, which has a reputation as a deadly predator. A highly evolved reptile with an impressive set of capabilities ranging from chemical receptors, superlative eyesight and a powerful whip like tail, the Bengal Monitor, should be considered a friend rather than a prey species, that can be hunted for its meat. Monitors prey on species that are not human friendly....such as rats, bandicoots, squirrels, certain birds, insects and other invertebrates, not to mention their critical role as scavengers - polishing off rotting carrion.

Monitors play an essential part in the overall balance of the local ecology and human ignorance and greed are taking their toll on these magnificent creatures.
