Festival of Whales Virtual Lecture Alisa Schulman-Janiger

Dana Point is celebrating our 50th Anniversary of the Festival of Whales, this year our lecture series is virtual today's talk comes from Alisa Schulman-Janiger always a favorite at the Festival.

Alisa Schulman-Janiger is a marine biologist, whale researcher, educator, and wildlife photographer. She has been the Director and Coordinator of the full-season shore-based ACS/LA Gray Whale Census and Behavior Project (which she restarted and extended) since 1984: spotting, tracking, and recording the gray whale migration from the Point Vicente Interpretive Center - with other citizen scientists that she has trained. Alisa has been photo-identifying California killer whales, archiving their sightings, and studying their distribution, natural history, and behavior for over 40 years; she co-founded the California Killer Whale Project, and is a co-author of the California/Western Mexico killer whale photo-ID catalog. She has been a member of the Cabrillo Whale watch program and instructor training whale watch naturalists for over 40 years. She is a naturalist on boats southern California, has been a researcher and naturalist in Monterey Bay, Alaska, and Massachusetts, and Baja California, and was a NOAA staff scientist and marine mammal observer on cruises from Alaska to California. Alisa has a Bachelor's degree in Zoology (emphasis on Marine Biology), and a Life Science Teaching Credential. She was head marine biologist/educator on boats for LAUSD's Sea Education Afloat Program for ten years, and taught Marine Biology, Advanced Marine Science, and Biology in San Pedro High School's Marine Science Magnet for 21 years. She is on NOAA's Stranding Response Team and Large Whale Entanglement Response Team. She has authored or co-authored over two dozen peer-reviewed papers on killer whales, gray whales, humpback whales, and pilot whales, including killer whale, and gray whale, and pilot whale photo-ID catalogs.
