"La « Destinée manifeste" est une expression apparue en 1845 pour désigner l'idée selon laquelle la nation américaine aurait pour mission divine l'expansion de la « civilisation » vers l'ouest, et à partir du XXème siècle,
dans le monde entier. Cette idée a pris corps de façon significative lors de la présidence de John Polk (1845-1849), précisément à l'époque de la défaite des baleiniers américains face aux cachalots."


Le temps n'est pas perçu comme linéaire au sein des sociétés « traditionnelles », il s'organise comme un anneau de Möbius (Lézy 2008). Cet éternel recommencement implique un « effet réversif de l'évolution » (Patrick Tort) :
la sélection naturelle, née de la lutte pour l'existence, sélectionne les instincts sociaux, dont le développement en « civilisation » s'oppose de plus en plus à la lutte pour l'existence, donc à la sélection naturelle."

Time is not perceived as linear within “traditional” societies, it is organized like a Möbius ring (Lézy 2008). This eternal new beginning implies a "reversive effect of evolution" (Patrick Tort): natural selection,
