Summary of Video

In this video, we will talk about some things you need to consider before getting a Ragdoll cat.

Number one, shedding.

There are pages on the internet that claim that Ragdoll cats don't shed. However, as they are long-haired cats, it is inevitable that they will shed their fur. Many factors come into play when it comes to how much they shed, including the seasons, climate conditions and diets. For example, in colder conditions, Ragdolls develop a thicker coat which will naturally shed when spring comes. That being said, they do not shed as much as you may think, even though they have thick and fluffy coat.

Number two, Ragdolls require frequent grooming.

It is important to know that Ragdolls require frequent grooming. Regular grooming helps to prevent them from developing tangles and skin issues. It is ideal to get your Ragdoll cat used to being groomed at a young age. To keep their coat soft and lush, it is recommended that they are brushed twice a week. Some ragdolls may feel uncomfortable with the brush so if possible, use a soft-bristled brush and consider giving them a treat after each grooming session to encourage positive associations.

Number three, Ragdolls are not hypoallergenic.

Humans tend to be allergic to two things in cats, their undercoat as well as their saliva. Although Ragdolls are known for not having an undercoat, which can definitely reduce the chance of getting an allergic reaction from them, you may still be exposed to the allergens from their saliva. As with all other healthy cats, Ragdolls use their tongues to clean and groom themselves. So it is unavoidable that they have saliva on their fur. This is something to take note of if you are allergic to cats!

Number four, Ragdolls are known to be ‘floppy’ or limp.

Ragdoll cats are notoriously known to be ‘floppy’ as they tend to move in a loose and clumsy way. When they are being held up, they have the tendency to go limp. This is because their muscles relax whenever they are being held. This is a sign that they are happy and calm in your arms. It also shows that they trust you and do not see you as a threat. Even though they are large and muscular, it is a pleasant surprise that they can be so gentle and limp!

Number five, Ragdolls are considered large cat breeds.

If you are used to domestic shorthair cats, you might be surprised at how large Ragdolls generally can be. Therefore, if you have a Ragdoll cat, you may need a bigger litter box, a bigger cat bed or a bigger cat tree. Because of their large size, you will also need a consider getting a larger cat carrier as they are bigger and heavier than most cats.

Number six, beware of scams

Believe it or not, there are plenty of scams out there on the internet when it comes to owning a purebred Ragdoll cat or kitten. You would want to ensure that you are adopting a Ragdoll through a breeder registered with reputable cat associations such as TICA and CFA. You may also take recommendations from a trusted friend or family member. It is important to do your research to make sure you are adopting from a legitimate breeder. The first step towards getting a healthy Ragdoll starts with a trusted and reputable breeder.
