Combining two striking breeds like the Golden Retriever and German Shepherd can truly produce the ultimate dog.
The size of a German Shepherd Golden Retriever mix, or Golden Shepherd, will vary depending on a number of factors, but on average will be around 20 to 27 inches in height and weigh around 60 to 95 pounds, putting them into the large category of dog - not surprising when considering that both dogs are large breeds.
When it comes to shedding, Golden Shepherds are unfortunately among the worst for this. German Shepherds, also known as German Shedders, are notorious year-round shedders and have thick undercoats that will blow twice a year.
When the thick and plentiful fur of the Golden Retriever is added to the double coat of a German Shepherd, the resulting coat can be difficult to manage to say the least. Staying on top of brushing and grooming will be super important if you want to keep your home clean!
Where possible we’d recommend adopting a Golden Shepherd from a charity or adoption center. As they’re not the most popular mixed breed, you may find that they’ll have one available.
However, if you’re looking for a Golden Shepherd puppy, we’d recommend getting in contact with breeders since they’ll be able to advise you on when their dog is next going to have a litter, and as always, It’s so important to do your research and choose a reputable breeder.
When it comes to training, Golden Shepherds are fairly easy to train. Since both breeds are intelligent, attentive, and learn quickly, they’re capable of following commands and quickly showing respect.
As a result of this, when you combine these breeds together, the dog should be easy to train, and while all dogs can be stubborn from time to time, keeping on top of the training will help promote good behavior.
But, It’s important to remember that all dogs are trainable, and how trained your dog is will ultimately depend on you as an owner. If you’re willing to put the time and effort into training, then you’ll see the results.
However, if you don’t put the time into training a Golden Shepherd, given their energy and intelligence, you may find the dog behaves poorly and becomes destructive.
When it comes to the lifespan of mixed breeds, it’s difficult to provide an exact age. However, we can guesstimate. On average, a Golden Shepherd will live for around 10 to 14 years, but this will vary depending on the health of the dog.
And when it comes to a dog’s health, this is why it’s so important to choose a reputable breeder. You should always ask for the health history and background of both parents before purchasing.
This will give you a better idea of any potential health issues that may arise, as the dogs being bred should be healthy and free from illnesses where possible to prolong the lifespan of the puppy.
When you combine the best qualities of both breeds the German Shepherd Golden Retriever mix has a lot to offer. It loves people, is highly intelligent, loyal, and can be great with children and other pets.
If you’re seeking the perfect canine companion for your family, then the Golden Shepherd is well worth your consideration.
