Do cats get jealous? They certainly do, and a jealous cat can turn a household upside down. Scratching, lashing out, and even spraying urine in the house — these are just a few things a seriously jealous cat can do. But what is behind this anger? It's usually just insecurity. Cats need to feel that their place in a home's hierarchy is secure in order to be happy, and a number of factors can affect this. Multiple cat households can be hard on cats who are prone to jealousy, because there is so much competition for attention, space, and food.
In this video, you will meet my cat Malou, a 16-year old Maine Coon mix, who has had a problem with jealousy most of her life. Malou is one of six cats in our home, not including the numerous foster kitties who come and go, and she has resorted to fighting and — worst of all — spraying urine in the house! And after carefully assessing the situation, I realized that what I had been doing for so many years in response to Malou's bad behavior was WRONG.
Here's what finally did help.
Our house is now peaceful (most of the time). I hope what I learned can help you with your jealous cat, too.
