It's important to know how to correctly groom a Maine Coon cat. If you don't groom them, they get very matted. We use a tangle teaser brush and if there are any knots, these are gently removed with a comb.
If you don't groom cats with long hair regularly, you'll never be able to get a brush or comb through their fur.
Matted fur pulls at a cat's skin making it tender and allowing sores to develop.
In extreme cases, the only way to remove big mats is by shaving a cat's fur. This often has to be done under sedation which poses a health risk.
