The presence of blood within the front (anterior) chamber of the eye is referred to as hyphema, and it is an indication of either a serious ophthalmic condition or a systemic disease. The quantity of blood in the front chamber varies. Mild hyphema may merely appear as a pinkish-red staining of the fluid in front of the eye, or as red blood settling out on the chamber's bottom. Severe hyphema occurs when the entire chamber is filled with blood, rendering the animal blind.
