The Lycan Shepherd is a brand new breed in development that has been turning heads due to its gorgeous wolf-like appearance.
The Lycan Shepherd is so rare that there is very little information publicly available about this new breed-in-progress. However, there are photographs posted by a handful of owners that attest to the beauty and uniqueness of this emerging dog breed.

Dog or Werewolf?

The Lycan Shepherd is named for the breed’s similarity to a Lycanthrope.

A Lycanthrope is a human with the ability to transform itself either into a full-on wolf or into a being who has traits that are wolf-like.

The Lycan Shepherd’s proposed breed name, therefore, references a dog with human-like and also wolf-like qualities.

While Lycan Shepherds are hard to come by at the moment, demand for them is definitely increasing. This added interest will typically drive a new breed’s development and official registration metrics.

The Lycan Shepherd is also part of the Lycan Shepherd Project.

Why Isn’t the Lycan Shepherd Officially Recognized and Registered Yet?

In the United States, the American Kennel Club (AKC) is the official purebred registration organization.

The AKC has very strict guidelines and standards that new dog breeds must meet in order to receive recognition and registration as an AKC purebred dog.

Any new breed needs a minimum of 40 years’ worth of documentation and pedigrees before being able to be recognized as a new breed.

The Lycan Shepherd therefore has a long way to go to amass the required data and documentation, not to mention lineage and sheer numbers, to qualify as an AKC-registered purebred breed.

Lycan Shepherd Versus Blue Bay Shepherd

There are more than a few different shepherd dog breeds under development at the moment.

The Blue Bay Shepherd is perhaps the best-known new shepherd dog breed.

As with the Lycan Shepherd, there is really only one dog breeder that is working seriously at the moment to establish this new breed.

The Blue Bay Shepherd is named after this original breeder’s location - Palm Bay, Florida.

Blue Bay and Lycan breeders appear to be incorporating the iconic German Shepherd into their new breeds-in-development.

What makes the Lycan Shepherd Unique?

The dogs are designed to display certain desirable appearances and temperament traits such as:

A larger brain-to-body size

The goal is to develop a canine with superior intellect, especially with respect to their ability to solve problems. The wolf has a larger brain-to-body ratio than the modern domestic dog.

Leggy, rangy wolf-like appearance

The lean body type and long legs of the wolf are desirable traits that the Lycan Shepherd also possesses. This body type is also associated with a high level of athletic ability.

Great work ethic

The addition of German Shepherd characteristics ensures the Lycan Shepherd dog breed will inherit the solid work ethic and trustworthy nature of the GSD and Malinois breeds.

There are Three Dog Breeds That Form the new Lycan Shepherd:

The Blue Bay Shepherd, the working line German Shepherd, and the Belgian Malinois.
Since the ultimate goal is a domestic dog with wolf-like appearances, the breeder began with a wolf-dog and a domestic dog. They have also used European German Shepherds and wolf-dogs.

The breeder recently entered their sixth year of hybrid generational breeding and are hand-issuing signed pedigree certificates. Each puppy also has a unique number.

Creating a whole new dog breed can be a lifelong project. Breeders often start with nothing more than a vision of what might be possible with strategic breeding and careful genetic study.
