At the Polish Wigilia, we always share the Opłatek (the wafer) in the old tradition which includes our pets. We honor them because animals were the first at the manger to witness the Christchild. Legend has it that animals who eat Oplatek on Christmas Eve will be able to speak at midnight, but only those who are pure of spirit will be able to hear them. Actually, it was Maki who was pure of spirit. Like all good dogs, she gave boundless unconditional love to her people. Her whimsy and wit brought us so much laughter. She lived to the fullest with pure GSP joy.

Our Halloween Monster (so-called due to her GSP mania and Oct 31st birthday) is now our GSP Ghost. How fitting that she has left us on the beautiful Polish holiday of All Saints and All Souls Day. Like the Ood with the 10th Doctor, Stas' was with us on zoom and sang her to her rest.
We light a lamp tonight at Ba's grave, sprinkle some of Maki's remains and release her to run once again. We'd like to think that her spirit mingles with all those she has loved so well. Godspeed our beloved GSP, a treasured member of the Gunkel family and forever our Good Girl, Maki.
