Myrtle was such a weird cat and I love her for it. She never knew what she wanted. She was ticklish. She loved being spanked and would greet us on the stairs by the front door when we came home so we would slap her butt. She'd roll around and creak and purr for a while then all of a sudden she had enough and would hiss and smack us. But the moment we stopped she'd then look at us like "why did you stop? I didn't tell you to stop!"
She was a lot shyer than Hermy and liked my dad more than me. It didn't help that I was a hyper kid that didn't know how to play well with cats. She got much more comfortable as I got older and calmer and she got better at meeting new people. She had stomatitis and eventually had to get most of her teeth pulled aside from her front teeth. She adjusted very well and could still eat both wet and dry food.
She loved to prove us wrong whenever we said something about her. My parent's friends were over at a dinner and we talked about how shy she was and then all of a sudden she came up and started begging everyone for food and pets. My mom was telling someone how she was good and never jumped up on the tables and within seconds she jumped up on the table. Mom was telling me she liked gentle pets more than spanks so Myrtle slapped her hand when she tried to show me.
She was very close with Hermy for the first few months but drifted apart and barely tolerated each other for the rest of their lives. She was sad when Hermy passed at 14 years and would cry for a while after. I was at college at the time and my parents were all over the place so they never did get a new cat to be a companion for her.
I wasn't able to be there with her near the end of her life since I was away at college but I did my best to come by and visit. I was worried she had forgotten me when I went to see her for the first time in several years but she remembered me and seemed happy to see me!
She lived to be 17. I was able to go and say goodbye to her and I'm so thankful I did. I miss you babygirl and how unique and strange you were.
