Why are cats kneading? So, kneading is a frequent action among domestic cats in which they stretch out and pull in their front paws, often alternating between right and left limbs, while relaxed. There are several hypotheses as to why cats knead. Kneading may have evolved from cats' wild predecessors treading down grass or leaves to create a temporary nest in which to rest. Alternatively, the action might be a holdover from when a baby would knead the mother's teat to increase milk supply. [Schwartz, 2003] Kneading might also be a sort of communication between owner and feline: because of the action's maternal link, it could be a way for the cat to express affection for his or her human friend. [Bradshaw,2006].
