Porsche has unveiled its Formula E race car for the next two seasons: the Porsche 99X Electric. This fully electric, open-wheel marvel aligns with the updated standards of Formula E’s third generation, known as GEN3 Evo. Porsche has packed this machine with top-notch in-house developments to stay at the front of the pack.
Making its online debut on October 24, the Porsche 99X Electric appeared in a film alongside Bruno Correia, Formula E’s safety car driver and GEN3 Evo development driver. The car showcases standout technical innovations, including the new front-wheel drive activation system, improved grip tires, and an updated front wing design. The driver lineup remains the same for the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, with reigning World Champion Pascal Wehrlein and Antonio Félix da Costa, last season’s driver with the most wins, leading the way. The Andretti Formula E team, which uses Porsche cars, will see former World Champion Jake Dennis paired with new Porsche works driver Nico Müller.
GEN3 Evo regulations require standard hardware across teams, but Porsche’s upgrades still make it a force to be reckoned with. Now, the 99X Electric can engage front-wheel drive during qualifying duels, race starts, and in Attack Mode. This activation provides temporary all-wheel drive, enabling rapid acceleration from zero to sixty-two miles per hour in approximately two seconds. Porsche’s engineers have focused on optimizing this feature to ensure maximum efficiency, with valuable insights gained for Porsche’s electric road cars.
This season, Hankook’s enhanced high-performance tires will push the 99X Electric’s speed potential even further. Each car is limited to two sets of tires per weekend, or three for double-header events, with a tire profile designed to handle both wet and dry conditions.
The Porsche 99X Electric’s updated look includes a bolder front wing and new colors, Purple Sky Metallic and Shade Green Metallic, replacing the traditional black, white, and red. Inspired by the Taycan Turbo GT, these colors represent Porsche’s commitment to electrification and innovation. The fresh design marks a new era in both performance and Porsche’s commitment to sustainable technology, underscoring the brand’s forward-thinking spirit in the progressive world of Formula E.
