Northern Plains Gray Langur or Bengal Hanuman Langur Eating Albizia Seed

The Northern Plains Gray Langur, also known as the Bengal Hanuman Langur, is a species of Old World monkey found in the Indian subcontinent. These arboreal primates are known for their unique dietary habits, which include a variety of fruits, leaves, and seeds. In this video, we see a group of Northern Plains Gray Langurs feasting on Albizia seeds, which are a favorite food source for many langur species.

As the video starts, we see the langurs high up in the canopy of a dense forest, deftly removing the seeds from the Albizia pods. The pods are green and elongated, and each one contains a cluster of small, brown seeds. The langurs use their strong jaws and sharp teeth to crack open the pods and extract the seeds, which they then swallow whole. As they eat, they make soft, contented grunts and chirps, indicating their pleasure at the tasty treat.

Albizia seeds are an important food source for many langur species, providing them with essential nutrients and energy. In addition to seeds, langurs also eat leaves, fruits, flowers, and even insects, depending on the season and availability of food. Their varied diet makes them important seed dispersers, helping to maintain the health and biodiversity of the forest ecosystem.

The Northern Plains Gray Langur is a social animal, living in large groups of up to 50 individuals. Within the group, there is a strict dominance hierarchy, with males typically occupying the highest rank. This dominance is often asserted through aggressive displays and vocalizations, such as loud calls and barks.

In addition to their unique dietary habits and social structure, langurs are also known for their physical adaptations. They have long, powerful limbs and a prehensile tail that allows them to grasp branches and move through the forest canopy with ease. Their fur is often multicolored, with a distinctive pattern of lighter and darker shades that varies between individuals and subspecies.

The Northern Plains Gray Langur is listed as a species of Least Concern by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
