Of cats and coyotes.
Questions to ponder in this episode.
How are these cats that spend so much time in the woods surviving regular, close proximity to coyotes when neighborhood pets are supposedly often killed by coyotes?
What is the impact of these cats on the wildlife in this habitat?
What should our attitude toward these cats be? Our attitude toward coyotes?
How much do you think I personally am affecting the situation, if at all, and what would your next steps be?
Background:
Starting last summer I put out water for wildlife during the drought and set up trail cams. I then started adding seeds, veggies, and fruit to give the struggling wildlife a little boost in the extremely depleted habitat. I realized I was neglecting the coyotes so I started putting stuff out for them as well.
What I found in the footage from the last 8 months was a large and unexpected amount of cats living in the creek area. How many are fully feral and how many are just visiting from their human homes?
The concentration of urban development surrounding this creek area makes it hard to determine if these cats are feral or actually owned. They certainly look healthy, but they also don’t have collars. If these are domestic pets, considering that neighborhood cats supposedly get picked off by coyotes often, it leaves one wondering how domestic cats can successfully enter the wild and leave the wild intact.
The number of cats I’ve witnessed in combination with the potential total number of unwitnessed cats from the surrounding neighborhoods makes me very concerned that the local wildlife are being heavily depleted by these impressive hunters.
