A pair of Bald Eagles are now nesting within 5 miles of downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania along the Monongahela River.

The Hays bald eagle pair first began nesting along the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh in 2013. The nest was initially observed by workers at the Keystone Iron and Metal Company. The pair successfully hatched one eaglet but on June 6, 2013 a strong storm blew the nest down and the adults successfully fledged the eaglet from a perch in the vines below. In the fall of 2013 the pair built a new nest in a Hackberry tree and a camera was installed on this new nest in December of 2013. In February of 2017 the Hackberry fell in a storm and the pair immediately built a replacement nest in a Sycamore, with a successful fledge. In the fall of 2018 the pair began constructing the current nest in a red oak.
