---►El registro más antiguo conocido de un perro cazador de ratas es el Hatch, cuyos restos fueron recuperados del barco Mary Rose, el buque insignia de Enrique VIII que se hundió en 1545 y que una vez estuvo a bordo para controlar la población de ratas.

El nombre de la raza proviene del hecho de que sus primeros ancestros fueron introducidos a los Estados Unidos por trabajadores migrantes británicos, ya que los perros se usaban para cebar ratas. Sin embargo, en su mayor parte, desarrollaron la velocidad de la caza de parásitos. Su velocidad se utiliza para combatir parásitos y para la caza menor como ardillas y liebres. Después de la década de 1890, este tipo de raza se hizo popular en los Estados Unidos y se cruzó con sabuesos, galgos italianos y Manchester Terriers. Muchos de los terriers de rata eran indistinguibles de los pequeños perros de caza de raza mixta conocidos como feistas.
