I rescued Pussy's Bow about 9 weeks ago when she was noticed clinging to her dead mother on powerlines. The energy company got her down and she was brought into care.
She was named Pussy's Bow because there is a saying in Australia that if you're completely fed up with something, you're up to Pussy's Bow. It can mean you're stuffed full of food up to your neck, or totally fed up with the situation, and Pussy's Bow was completely fed up with the situation in which she found herself, and wasn't afraid to let me know. (A Pussy's Bow is the neck tie bow on a blouse).
Pussy's Bow was upset on the first night and cried and cried, so I fed her and brought her to bed with me, so both of us could get some sleep. Provided she could hear my heartbeat and breathing, and was warm and swaddled, she slept. In the morning she had settled and wasn't so upset with life.
I moved her along to another carer within 48 hours and she was renamed Bo.
The carer sent me a video this morning of her entering creche; I love to see the end of the story; I love to see that the babies I have rescued are all grown up and ready to go onto the release phase of their journey back into the wild.
YAY. Fly free soon sweetheart and show us what you can do.
Thanks Susan for the footage of Bo's creche entry.
When the hand raised babies are 3 months old, they go into a creche, where they join other orphans and form a group. At this stage they'd be separating from this batty mums and be becoming more independent in the colony. In creche, at this age, they learn batty etiquette and how to live in a batty society. They shrug off their human mums and want to be with the other batties. When they are emotionally and physically ready, and uninjured, and around 4-5 months old, they’re put into a release cage under a colony and they can integrate into the colony and fly out with the wild bats. If they can’t find enough food, they can always come back to the cage for a feed. Support feeding is put up on the outside of the cage for as long as they are coming back and eating it. When the colony flies out for winter, they have fully integrated and fly out with them.
