The recovery of the white rhinoceros from just a few dozen individuals in the 19th century to the several thousand animals alive today is recognised as one of the greatest conservation success stories of a large mammal. However, unsustainable poaching losses fuelled by an increased demand for horn are beginning to erase this progress.
