Hey there, GuineaGang!
How much do you know about the social and stylish Coronet Guinea Pig?
Coronet guinea pigs have long, luxurious hair, and many physical similarities to Silkie guinea pigs. In fact, the Coronet came about from breeders mixing the Silkie and American breeds. Coronets officially became recognized as their own breed in 1998 after the hybrid had become more prevalent as pets and in the show community.
Coronets have short foreheads and long flowing coats of tortoiseshell, coffee and white, or cinnamon and agouti coloring. Their hair is usually a bit wavier than a silkie’s, with smaller rosettes on their foreheads, and hair that flows forward over their faces, rather than straight back.
Coronet guinea pigs are especially playful and love to socialize. They’re known to get along well with other guinea pigs, so they make great additions to an established guinea pig household.
The Coronet guinea pig does require a little extra time and care due to its grooming demands, including daily brushing, frequent detangling, and regular haircuts. It’s also especially important to keep their hair clean, trimmed, and dry, to help avoid bacterial growth and respiratory disease.
If you’re able to invest this extra time commitment, these charming, social, and elegant guinea pigs are certainly worth the effort.
See you soon, GuineaGang!
