Birds are the most diverse group of land vertebrates existing today, having around double the number of species as mammals or lizards. Since the discovery of Archaeopteryx fossils in Germany dating back to the later part of the Jurassic Period, palaeontologists and biologists have pondered the origin and diversification of birds. A limited fossil record prevented untangling the mystery of bird evolution and diversification until fairly recently when a sharp increase in the discovery of Cretaceous bird fossils revealed an unexpected diversity of birds from this latter part of the Mesozoic Era. Professor Anusuya Chinsamy-Turan helps us to understand the evolution of birds during the Mesozoic, and shows us the path from the Mesozoic to modern birds, today’s avian Dinosaurs. She brings in her own research and that of some of her palaeontology colleagues together to tell us the story of bird evolution.
