Tagore Society for Rural Development (TSRD) is one of the oldest and largest civil society organization in the eastern India engaged in rural development since 1969. TSRD was founded by the then Ghandian leader Sri Jayprakash Narayan and freedom fighter Sri Pannalal Dasgupta imbibing the philosophy of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. TSRD is working in more than 1503 villages spread in 35 blocks of two states viz. West Bengal and Jharkhand through its branch offices under the name and style of Rangabelia Project, Sagar Project, Hingalgunj Project, Bolpur Project, Tapan Project, Rajnagar-Khoirasol Project in West Bengal and Patamda Project and Maheshpur Project in Jharkhand. Name of the projects indicates their operational head office only but each of them covers numbers of villages and blocks and also works with different thematic areas. All the project areas of TSRD are situated in the remotest corners of the states like islands of Sundarbans or at the international border of Bangladesh in northern Bengal or hilly dry plateau forest base in Jharkhand. The organization has been lead by veteran freedom fighter Late Pannalal Dasgupta and later on Late Padmashree Tushar Kanjilal, the national teacher awarded by the President of India for his invaluable contribution in social service sector and presently by Shri Bilwa Gopal Chatterjee- the then worker of Khadi Movement initiated by Mahatma Ghandhi.
