A kingfisher is any of approximately 90 species of birds classified into three families (Alcedinidae, Halcyonidae, and Cerylidae) that are known for their spectacular dives into water. They are found all over the world, but are mostly found in the tropics. Kingfishers have a large head, a long and massive bill, and a compact body that ranges in length from 10 to 42 cm (4 to 16.5 inches). Their feet are small, and their tails are short or medium-length with a few exceptions. The majority of species have vibrant plumage in bold patterns, and many are crested.
These colourful, vocal birds are known for their daring hunting techniques. The bird usually sits motionless, watching for movement from a favourite perch. When it sees its prey, it dives into the water and catches it in its dagger-shaped bill no deeper than 25 cm (10 inches) below the surface. It bobs to the surface with a quick downstroke of the wings. The prey is then returned to the perch, where it is stunned by beating it against the perch before swallowing it. Crustaceans, amphibians, and reptiles are also eaten by many species.
The belted kingfisher (Megaceryle alcyon), the only widespread North American species, is a river dweller in the subfamily Alcedininae. When disturbed, this handsome crested bird flies off over the water, uttering a loud rattling call. It is about 30 cm (12 inches) long, bluish grey on top and across the breast, and white on the bottom. Only females wear the brownish red "belt" across the lower breast. In its courtship ritual, the male offers fish to the female as she perches. Following copulation, the pair circles high overhead and chases each other while shrieking.
