Japanese divers capture rare footage of live giant squid!

This is a giant squid, 2.5 metres in length, that was recorded swimming in the waters of the high seas on the west coast of Japan.

Early January 2023, Yosuke Tanaka and his wife Miki who run a diving business in Toyooka City, Hyogo region, were alerted about the squid by a fishing tackle seller who saw them in the bay.

The pair then set out in their boat to find the giant squid near the rocky shoreline.

The animal's size and huge eyes are striking. Tanaka said he imagined the squid were strong enough to take on whales, one of their main predators.

"I could see the tentacles moving. I thought it would be dangerous to be grabbed by the tentacles and carried somewhere," he said.

Giant squids are known to live in the waters around Japan and occasionally wash up on beaches, but are rarely seen in the wild.

He admitted that this experience will never be forgotten.

"It's great fun. I don't think it could get any rarer than this."

"I heard not much is known about this creature. I would love it if it helps us learn more," said Tanaka.
