The sphynx cat is one of the strangest cat breeds in the world. The main characteristic of this cat is its lack of fur. These cats are not entirely hairless but are covered with a soft downy coat, resembling the skin of a peach. Some of these animals also lack whiskers and eyelids. Their head resembles the Devon Rex breed while their eyes have a lemon shape.
The history of the hairless cats started in 1960 when a hairless kitten was born out of a domestic shorthair cat named Elisabeth in Ontario, Canada. The first hairless cat’s name was Prune, and its owners cultivated the gene by crossing it with its mother. The image of the sphynx cat is unusual, and some people even consider it to be scary. Specialists say that the Aztecs also raised hairless cats, but the sphynx cat is the first breed grown especially for this characteristic. The reproduction of the sphynx cat started in 1966 in Ontario, however, most of the sphynx cats of today descend from three hairless kittens found in Toronto in 1978.
The sphynx cat is a large size cat, with a long, well proportioned body. It has a triangular shaped head, with a slightly flat forehead and large ears, a short nose and wrinkly skin. This cat’s tail is long and thin, of a conical shape. It has long, muscular legs. The sphynx is a sociable, affectionate cat, devoted and loyal to its owner. They love human companionship and at the same time are very tolerant towards other pets. They are also very curious, agile, playful, and friendly with children. Due to the lack of hair, this cat needs to be covered when the temperatures drop outside or indoors.
A sphynx cat female can give birth to four kittens on average. The life expectancy of a sphynx cat is of 10 to 15 years.
