The woodpecker is one of the most well-known birds in the world, being part of the Picidae family which also includes sapsuckers and wrinecks. There are over 200 species of woodpeckers known to date. They are some of the most intelligent birds after ravens and crows.
The woodpecker can be found in forests all around the globe with the exception of Australia, Madagascar, New Guinea, New Zealand, and the Antarctic. They live alone in nests which they dig up in tree trunks. Although they can also be found in temperate climate areas, most woodpeckers live in South America and Indonesia.
Most woodpeckers spend their lives in trees, spiralling up the trunks in search of insects. Early in spring, around March, they become very territorial, fighting each other, and making a lot of noise. The woodpecker is also called the forest doctor since it feeds especially on the worms, bugs and insects that attack the trees.
Most woodpeckers only fly short distances, and they are not very good fliers.
In Africa and America there are some woodpecker species that live on the ground.
Woodpeckers have a long tongue, of a cylindrical shape, sticky with short hairs, which helps them extract the larvae and insects from the tree trunks.
The most popular woodpecker in the world is Woody, which came to life in a cartoon produced by Walter Lantz Studio and distributed by Universal Sudios between 1940 and 1972. Its trademark laugh is known by many people born in the second half of the 20th century who watched this cartoon as children.
