Ossi arrives at 09.28 this morning bringing a clump of moss, and is quickly followed by a female stranger. Ossi reacts by coy-mantling, a form of courtship behaviour, and the female stays on the nest for a while. At 09.31 she moves towards Ossi, he startles, and they both fly off. She's wearing a single ring, a silver one on her left leg, so isn't the unringed female who visited on 29th June, see here: https://youtu.be/1uHij6OOMg8 There was another female who visited the previous day 28th June, but that female was very pale with almost no necklace, see here: https://youtu.be/ugdMeaRHuMo. Which makes three females showing an interest in Ossi and his nest! Very interesting, and bodes well for him finding a mate and raising a new family next year.
25th June attack: 10.31 a raven attacked causing the death of Alma and one of the chicks. Another chick was injured, Ossi tried to defend to no avail and wounded Alma was taken on the ground by a fox. Later Osprey Project management removed the two chicks, relocating them to another nest, leaving Ossi on his own https: (https://youtu.be/vOSb3v83EZo).
Statement from the Satakunta Osprey Project (google translate from Finnish): The relaxed atmosphere after Midsummer's Eve in the morning changed in the blink of an eye as Alma and the chicks were at peace in the nest. The raven appeared on Alma's guard tree and launched a fatal chain of events. Alma set out to drive it furiously from near the nest and was apparently damaged in the heat of the air battle and somehow ended up on the ground. The long 10-minute battle between Raven and Alma ended badly from the point of view of osprey nesting. The raven arrived at the nest after defeating Alma with her down in its beak and attacked the chicks. The youngest of the chicks died during handling by the raven, but the older two survived when Ossi arrived from the fishing to defend the nest. Ossi drove the raven out of the nest and stayed in the area for a long time to warn. Soon after, a fox arrived at the battlefield, staying there for a while, and leaving for his travels (with Alma).
The progress of nesting became virtually impossible after Alma's death. Such small chicks cannot be flown by an Osprey male alone, i.e. fed, defended and protected from heat. Numerous experts were consulted on the follow-up and it was finally concluded that the only option for the larger chicks is in another nest.

The nest:
Nest #1 is located in the Satakunta region in Western Finland. Ospreys have nested there since 2005. The male Osprey, Ossi, has inhabited the nest since 2014. He has a ring on his right leg and according to the ringing data he hatched in Karkku, Sastamala in 2009. Alma, the female, didn’t have a ring and therefore her age and hatching location are unknown.
Ospreys have nested at the site from 2005 through 2020. In 2019 Alma and Ossi’s nesting failed due to a Goshawk attacking the nestlings. Nevertheless, the pair returned the following year and raised three fledglings. Since 2017 Alma and Ossi have raised a total of eight fledglings.
Appropriate permits have been obtained for the description of the nests from both landowners and the Southwest Finland Center for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment.
