Surviving Satakunta Osprey Nest 3 chick cuddles up to the bodies of its dead siblings 11 Jun 2021

This has been a terrible season so far for Osprey nest-cam watchers. Many adult Ospreys did not return from migration, and many chicks have not survived. Sadly both of these are the case with Finnish Satakunta nest number three - Helmi did not return this year and her mate Ahti took a new female, Nuppu. Three eggs were produced and all three hatched, but in the last few hours it's seen that tragically only one chick has survived. In this clip it's seen next to the sad little bodies of its brood-mates. Mum Nuppu eats some fish but doesn't offer any to the little one who clearly would like some food. What on earth happened to the other two? They were being fed and looked after. Very sad for the Satakunta Osprey project staff and volunteers, and for the nest-cam watchers.

Update from Satakunta Osprey Project 11/6/2021:
After previous happy news from Nupu and Ahti’s # 3 nest, nature quickly showed its other side. Of the three little chicks, two died yesterday during a severe thunderstorm. The female protected the chicks to the best of her ability, but after the rain stopped, only one was alive. The whole could have been affected by several factors, but during the storm, the chicks were allowed to cool down after getting wet under Nupu’s protection. The temperature dropped in the nest area by more than ten degrees during a thunderstorm. The events combined at least the following factors: a severe storm, the placement of the chicks in shelter, and the possible inexperience of the mother. I have to remember that the female Nuppu was not ringed as a nestling until 2018 and all the mother's activities are new to her. It tried its best to protect its chicks in a severe storm. Small chicks are particularly susceptible to heat fluctuations and other external factors.
